Glas Classic Cars for Sale

Glas classics enjoy general popularity in the scene. Only a few of them are registered for the road today, as they were built in small numbers and at a time when the demand for larger models came up. As a result of their simple technology and cheap price, Glas cars remain popular among old-timer fans.

Glas and the long road to becoming an automobile manufacturer

The Glas Landmaschinenfabrik was founded in 1883 under the name “Isaria”. After decades of success, numbers started to decline in the 40s. Management started looking for other promising markets to enter. Traveling in Italy, Andreas Glas took note of the popularity of Vespas and decided to start producing motor scooters. The scooters, which were produced from 1951 to 1956, formed the financial base for the production of cars, which started in 1955 with the Goggomobil. The name referred to Hans Glas’son’s nickname “Goggi”whom the car was named after.

The end of Glas

The 1960s brought financial difficulties that resulted in the end of Glas and its acquisition by BMW. The company had tried to expand its offerings and had prematurely released faulty models which proved to be a mistake.

Glas Classics

During the German boom during the 1950s, people sought for mobility for little money. Their needs were fulfilled by the legendary Goggomobil T250. The microcar astonishingly offered room for four people and saw exports to 36 countries within a year.  The second wiper blade of later models was revolutionary. Further Glas old-timer are the Glas 1300/1700 GT and the V8 models. Many smaller series were produced on the basis of the Goggomobil such as for example the Goggo Dart and the Carry All by Buckle Motors in Australia.
